Ruby Red Butler

Artist Statement

Rejecting modern solemnity and ironic detachment, Ruby Red Butler’s practice insists on tenderness and fun.

Drawing inspiration from vintage charms, toys, miniatures and automata, her work celebrates incongruence: stillness and motion, artificiality and sincerity, flexibility and permanence.

Memory and spirit are contained in moving and articulated parts. These pieces evade rigidity, instead operating as portable theatres where spirit is suffused into the inanimate.

Symbols of nostalgia and girlhood are investigated through intricate detail and specificity. This approach invites closer inspection, echoing Ruby’s thematic engagement with the complexity and sentimentality of internal worlds.

Ruby’s work pointedly confronts disillusion and apathy; contemporary function is re-enchanted with old-world charm and whimsy. Ornament and antiquity are treated not as excess but as quotidian encounters, upholding the everlasting romance of dedication. Unabashed, over-attached, precious, enduring.

Ruby Red Butler is based in Melbourne and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She has been studying jewellery for four years; her first collection debuted in 2024 for Christopher Hrysanidis’ runway fashion show ‘Lillies’
