Peter Hiosan
Artist Statement
My work primarily explores the use of Australian materials sourced locally and sustainably. From Western Australian Mother of Pearl to opals and sapphires sourced directly from miners in Queensland and New South Wales, I hand cut, carve and shape these material as required for my practice.
I incorporate these materials in my contemporary jewellery using techniques such as casting (Cuttlefish, Tupa, and sand casting) to create a unique textural aspect to my work. Alternate metals such as Shibuichi, Shaku-do and Mokume Gane are incorporated alongside silver, gold and non-precious metals and complement my use of stones and Mother of pearl in my jewellery.
